On the label
What is gymnema leaf extract in Olivaro?
Gymnema leaf extract is an extract of the leaf of a vine used in traditional medicine, and it sits in the Olivaro Proprietary Blend (Olivaro label).
The blend lists 22 ingredients in one 200 mg total. Gymnema is eighth, between green tea and coleus forskohlii. The label prints no amount for it, so the most gymnema could be is the whole 200 mg, and likely far less. If the 22 were equal, which the label does not say, each would be about 9.1 mg (200 / 22).
Olivaro is a liquid, not a capsule. The bottle reads “Balanced Blood Sugar Advanced Support*”, and the star leads to the FDA statement that the claim has not been evaluated.
| Name on the label | Gymnema Leaf Extract (in the 200 mg blend) |
|---|---|
| What it is | An extract of the leaf of a vine used in traditional medicine; the label lists it eighth of 22 in the blend and prints no amount |
| What it is sold for | Sold for blood sugar |
| Amount on the label | amount not printed |
| Amount used in research | A meta-analysis of 10 studies in 419 people with type 2 diabetes; LiverTox |
| What the studies found | A meta-analysis of 10 studies in 419 people with type 2 diabetes compared results with baseline and reported very high differences between studies. LiverTox says trials reported mild decreases in fasting glucose with increases in hemoglobin A1c, that the overall effectiveness in diabetes has not been shown, and gives 400 mg three times daily as the typical recommended dose. The whole Olivaro blend is 200 mg per mL for 22 ingredients, so gymnema is at most 200 mg and likely far less. |
| Main caution | LiverTox lists gymnema as a possible rare cause of liver injury. Because it is promoted for glucose, tell your clinician before adding it if you take diabetes medicine. |
Studies
Does gymnema affect blood sugar?
Small studies reported changes, but the evidence is weak, and LiverTox says effectiveness in diabetes has not been shown (LiverTox, Gymnema).
A meta-analysis of 10 studies with 419 people who had type 2 diabetes compared results with each person's own baseline (a before-and-after design) and reported very high differences between studies (Devangan 2021, gymnema type 2 diabetes meta). No doses are given in the abstract we read.
LiverTox says trials reported mild decreases in fasting glucose with increases in hemoglobin A1c. That mix is part of why the picture is unclear. We found no trial of gymnema at the unstated amount in this blend, and no trial tested Olivaro.
The ADA's 2026 Standards of Care do not recommend herbs for glycemic benefit (ADA 2026, Standards of Care, supplements).
Label vs reference
How much gymnema is in Olivaro compared with 400 mg three times daily?
We cannot tell. The label prints no gymnema amount, and LiverTox gives 400 mg three times daily as the typical dose.
Three times 400 mg is 1,200 mg a day. The whole Olivaro blend is 200 mg per 1 mL serving, so even if gymnema were the only ingredient, 200 / 1,200 is about one sixth. The dropper volume is not printed either, so a day of 1 or 2 droppers cannot be converted to mL.
| Item | Amount | Arithmetic |
|---|---|---|
| Olivaro label, gymnema | Not printed | At most 200 mg (the whole blend) |
| LiverTox typical dose | 400 mg three times daily | 3 x 400 = 1,200 mg |
| Ceiling against reference | About one sixth | 200 / 1,200 |
Safety
Can gymnema cause liver problems?
LiverTox lists gymnema as a possible, rare cause of liver injury (LiverTox, Gymnema).
LiverTox gives it a likelihood score of D. We have no report that Olivaro was involved, and the label prints no gymnema amount. Still, stop and get care if you notice dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, or belly pain, and tell your clinician about every supplement you take. People with liver disease should ask a clinician before use.
Chest pain, fainting, trouble breathing, or severe low blood sugar (confusion, fainting, seizure) need emergency care.

Is gymnema a concern with diabetes medicine?
Ask a pharmacist. We found no source that states a gymnema and diabetes-drug interaction, and the entry we read states none.
The caution rests on gymnema being sold for glucose and on general advice: a supplement that might lower blood sugar adds to medicine that can, and NCCIH says no herbal supplement has reliable evidence for controlling diabetes (NCCIH, Diabetes and dietary supplements). Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed, and never stop, skip or change it because of a supplement. See medicine interactions.
The label says pregnant or nursing mothers, children under 18 and people with a known medical condition should consult a physician first.
Claims vs evidence
What do Olivaro's blood sugar claims have to do with gymnema?
Gymnema is one of the herbs the blood sugar line points to, but no study tested the claim on this liquid.
The front also prints “Fasting Blood Sugar Health Support*”. We found no trial that tested it. The needle below is an editor's reading of how well human studies back the label's blood sugar line for one group on its own; it is a judgment, not a measurement, and not a rating of Olivaro.
Chromium
Little22 of 100
NIH says the effect on glucose in people with diabetes is small and its significance unclear; the label's 0.7 mcg is 2% of the Daily Value. (NIH ODS, Chromium) (Zhao 2022, chromium type 2 diabetes meta)
Gymnema
Little18 of 100
Small, mixed studies at amounts far above anything the 200 mg blend could hold for one ingredient. (Devangan 2021, gymnema type 2 diabetes meta) (LiverTox, Gymnema)
Green tea and guarana
Little15 of 100
Trials of green tea show little glycemic effect; both are caffeine sources, and the label prints no amounts. (Yu 2017, green tea glycemic meta) (Schimpl 2013, guarana review)
Ginseng and herbs
Little15 of 100
Small trials of single herbs at studied amounts; none at the unstated amounts in this blend. (Shishtar 2014, ginseng glycemic meta) (Hong 2024, astragalus type 2 diabetes meta)
Amino acids
Very little5 of 100
No human trial found at the unstated amounts, so there is nothing to set the label beside. (Saldanha 2023, proprietary blends perspectives)
Our reading of the sources, not a measurement. Each needle is an editor's judgment of how well human studies support the label's blood sugar lines for that ingredient group, at studied amounts. It does not rate Olivaro: no study tested the liquid or this 22-ingredient blend.

FAQ
Olivaro questions people ask
Is gymnema in Olivaro at an effective dose?
We cannot tell. The label prints no gymnema amount, only 200 mg for the whole 22-ingredient blend. LiverTox lists 1,200 mg a day as typical, and no trial tested Olivaro.
What is gymnema sylvestre?
It is a vine whose leaf is used in traditional medicine. The label lists Gymnema Leaf Extract in the blend. We found no source that identifies the preparation used in Olivaro.
Does gymnema lower blood sugar?
LiverTox says trials reported mild fasting glucose decreases, but effectiveness in diabetes has not been shown. A 10-study analysis of 419 people compared results with baseline and showed very high variation. Olivaro was not tested.
Can gymnema harm the liver?
LiverTox lists gymnema as a possible rare cause of liver injury. Stop and seek care for dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, or belly pain. We have no report linking Olivaro to liver injury.
Can I take gymnema with diabetes medicine?
Ask your clinician or pharmacist first. We found no source naming a gymnema and diabetes-drug interaction, but supplements that might lower blood sugar can add to medicines that do. Never change prescribed medicine because of a supplement.
Where is gymnema in the Olivaro blend order?
It is eighth of 22. FDA's rule asks blends to list ingredients in descending order by weight, but we did not verify the order and the label prints no amounts, so we rank nothing.
