L-arginine, beta-alanine, L-carnitine and GABA in Olivaro: what is known

Quick answer

Olivaro lists seven amino acids (L-glutamine, L-tyrosine, L-arginine, beta-alanine, L-ornithine, L-tryptophan, L-carnitine) plus GABA in its 200 mg blend, with no amount for any. Arginine trials used 4 to 24 g a day, and 200 mg is at most 5% of 4,000 mg. For four rows we found no source.

On the label

Which amino acids are in Olivaro?

Seven amino acid rows sit in the blend: L-glutamine, L-tyrosine, L-arginine base, beta-alanine, L-ornithine HCl, L-tryptophan and L-carnitine base. GABA is a related eighth name.

The label prints no amount for any of them, only one 200 mg total for all 22 blend names (Olivaro label). That means the most any one row could hold is 200 mg, and if the 22 were equal each would be about 9.1 mg (200 / 22), though the label does not say they are equal. FDA's rule, as read in the rule that (21 CFR 101.36(c), proprietary blends) cites, orders a blend from most to least by weight; we did not verify the order.

Row 1: Chromium (as chromium picolinate): 0.7 mcg, 2% of the Daily Value.

Row 2: Proprietary Blend, 200 mg in all (Daily Value not established), 22 ingredients in label order, with no amount printed for any single one:

  1. Maca (Lepidium meyenii) Root Extract
  2. Grape (Vitis vinifera) Seed Extract
  3. Guarana (Paullinia cupana) Seed Extract
  4. African Mango (Irvingia gabonensis) Seed Extract
  5. Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus Senticosus) Root Extract
  6. Astragalus Root Extract
  7. Green Tea (Camellia sinensis) Leaf Extract
  8. Gymnema Leaf Extract
  9. Coleus Forskohlii Root Extract
  10. Capsicum Annuum Fruit Extract
  11. Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) Fruit Extract
  12. Panax Ginseng Aerial Extract
  13. Raspberry Ketones
  14. L-Glutamine
  15. L-Tyrosine
  16. L-Arginine Base
  17. Beta-Alanine
  18. Monoammonium Glycyrrhizinate
  19. GABA (Gamma amino butyric acid)
  20. L-Ornithine HCl
  21. L-Tryptophan
  22. L-Carnitine Base

Other ingredients: Glycerin, water, organic lemon extract, stevia extract 97% (Reb A), xylitol, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, citric acid, natural flavors.

Typed from the label (Olivaro label). By FDA rule the ingredients of a proprietary blend are listed in descending order by weight (21 CFR 101.36(c), proprietary blends); the label does not print the weights.

Row by row

What do we know about each amino acid row?

Only three have sources we could use. For the other four rows, and for GABA, we found no source.

Amino acid rows: what we found (no trial tested Olivaro)
RowWhat we found
L-glutamineWe found no source
L-tyrosineWe found no source
L-arginine base11 trials, 387 people, 4 to 24 g a day; blood pressure lower (Dong 2011, arginine BP)
Beta-alanineTingling is the reported side effect (Dolan 2019, beta-alanine safety)
L-ornithine HClWe found no source
L-tryptophanWe found no source
L-carnitine baseResults in type 2 diabetes mixed; stomach effects at about 3 g (NIH ODS, Carnitine)
GABAWe found no source

"We found no source" is not a finding of harm or of benefit. It means we read nothing we could cite, and we will not guess. That includes tryptophan and medicine interactions.

Arginine

Can L-arginine lower blood pressure?

In one meta-analysis, oral arginine was followed by a systolic blood pressure fall of 5.4 mm Hg (Dong 2011, arginine BP).

That analysis pooled 11 randomized, placebo-controlled trials with 387 people, using 4 to 24 g a day. Olivaro's whole blend is 200 mg, which is at most 5% of 4,000 mg (200 / 4,000 = 0.05), the low end of that range. So the trial doses and the bottle are far apart, and no trial tested Olivaro.

For exercise, NIH's fact sheet reports doses up to 9 g a day generally tolerated (NIH ODS, exercise supplements). A trial in 153 people after a heart attack found more deaths in the arginine group (Schulman 2006, VINTAGE MI), and Memorial Sloan Kettering notes mixed evidence and one study of worse peripheral artery disease (MSK, Arginine). Anyone with heart disease, or on blood pressure medicine, should ask a clinician before using any arginine-containing product.

Beta-alanine

Does beta-alanine cause tingling?

Yes, in studies tingling (paresthesia) was the side effect reported, and it was the only one in two reviews (Dolan 2019, beta-alanine safety) (ISSN beta-alanine stand).

A review of 101 human studies found it was the only reported side effect, and dropouts matched placebo. The sports nutrition position stand says it can be reduced with divided doses (ISSN beta-alanine stand). Trials used grams a day to build muscle carnosine for exercise, and a meta-analysis of 40 studies in 1,461 people found only a small overall effect on exercise (Saunders 2017, beta-alanine). None of that concerns blood sugar, and the label prints no beta-alanine amount, so we cannot say whether a dropper would cause tingling.

Carnitine

What does NIH say about L-carnitine and type 2 diabetes?

NIH says results are mixed. Its fact sheet cites two meta-analyses in type 2 diabetes, one covering 41 trials at 0.25 to 4 g a day, and says larger trials are needed (NIH ODS, Carnitine).

It adds that the body makes carnitine, that healthy adults do not need it from supplements, that about 3 g a day can cause nausea, cramps or diarrhea, and that no upper limit is set. The label prints no carnitine amount, and 200 mg is the whole blend, so the label cannot be set beside those doses. L-carnitine is listed last in the blend.

Safety

Who should ask a clinician about amino acids first?

Anyone taking diabetes medicine, insulin, or blood pressure or blood thinner medicine should ask a pharmacist, and so should anyone with a heart or kidney condition.

Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed, and never stop or change it because of a supplement. The label tells pregnant or nursing mothers, children under 18 and people with a known medical condition to consult a physician. Chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing: call 911. The ADA's 2026 Standards of Care do not recommend micronutrients for glycemic benefit (ADA 2026, Standards of Care, supplements), and NCCIH finds no reliable evidence that any herbal supplement controls diabetes (NCCIH, Diabetes and dietary supplements).

Evidence

How well do human studies support these rows?

Thinly. The needles are an editor's reading, not a measurement and not a rating of Olivaro.

  • Chromium

    Little22 of 100

NIH says the effect on glucose in people with diabetes is small and its significance unclear; the label's 0.7 mcg is 2% of the Daily Value. (NIH ODS, Chromium) (Zhao 2022, chromium type 2 diabetes meta)

  • Gymnema

    Little18 of 100

Small, mixed studies at amounts far above anything the 200 mg blend could hold for one ingredient. (Devangan 2021, gymnema type 2 diabetes meta) (LiverTox, Gymnema)

  • Green tea and guarana

    Little15 of 100

Trials of green tea show little glycemic effect; both are caffeine sources, and the label prints no amounts. (Yu 2017, green tea glycemic meta) (Schimpl 2013, guarana review)

  • Ginseng and herbs

    Little15 of 100

Small trials of single herbs at studied amounts; none at the unstated amounts in this blend. (Shishtar 2014, ginseng glycemic meta) (Hong 2024, astragalus type 2 diabetes meta)

  • Amino acids

    Very little5 of 100

No human trial found at the unstated amounts, so there is nothing to set the label beside. (Saldanha 2023, proprietary blends perspectives)

Our reading of the sources, not a measurement. Each needle is an editor's judgment of how well human studies support the label's blood sugar lines for that ingredient group, at studied amounts. It does not rate Olivaro: no study tested the liquid or this 22-ingredient blend.

FAQ

Amino acid questions

Does Olivaro contain L-arginine?

Yes. The blend lists L-Arginine Base, with no amount printed. Trials of oral arginine used 4 to 24 g a day, and the whole blend is 200 mg, so the bottle is far below those doses. No trial tested Olivaro.

Does Olivaro contain GABA?

Yes. GABA (gamma amino butyric acid) is a blend row, with no amount printed. We found no source on it that we could cite, so we say nothing about its effects.

Is L-tryptophan in Olivaro, and does it interact with medicines?

Yes, L-tryptophan is a blend row with no amount. We found no source on its interactions, so we cannot say. Ask a pharmacist, especially if you take medicine for mood or sleep.

Why do some people feel tingling from beta-alanine?

Paresthesia, a tingling feeling, is the side effect reported in studies at gram doses, and splitting doses reduced it. The Olivaro label prints no beta-alanine amount, so we cannot say if it would happen.

Are L-glutamine and L-tyrosine in Olivaro?

Yes, both are blend rows with no amounts. We found no source on either that we could cite, so we make no claim about them.

Is L-carnitine proven for diabetes?

No. NIH says meta-analyses of carnitine in type 2 diabetes are mixed. The label prints no carnitine amount, and no trial tested Olivaro.
