Ingredient: chromium

Chromium picolinate in Olivaro: 0.7 mcg and what the evidence says

Quick answer

Chromium picolinate is the one Olivaro ingredient with its own printed amount: 0.7 mcg, which is 2% of the 35 mcg Daily Value (0.7 / 35). NIH calls chromium's effect on blood glucose unclear, and chromium may add to insulin or metformin. No trial tested Olivaro.

On the label

What is chromium picolinate in Olivaro?

Chromium picolinate is a form of the trace mineral chromium, and it is listed first on the Olivaro Supplement Facts panel at 0.7 mcg (Olivaro label).

The row reads “Chromium (as chromium picolinate) 0.7 mcg, 2% DV”. That is 0.0007 mg. The serving size is 1 mL. The label does not print how many mL a dropper holds, so we cannot say how much chromium a day comes from 1 or 2 droppers.

Olivaro is a liquid, not a capsule. Chromium sits outside the 200 mg proprietary blend, which is why it alone has an amount.

What the studies foundNIH's fact sheet says chromium 'lowered fasting plasma glucose and HbA1c levels slightly in people with diabetes' but that the clinical significance is unclear. A meta-analysis of 10 placebo-controlled trials in 509 people with type 2 diabetes found only HbA1c was lower, not fasting glucose. The ADA's 2026 Standards of Care say there is insufficient evidence to support routine use of chromium to improve glycemia. The label's amount, 0.7 mcg, is 2% of the Daily Value and 1/50 of the adequate intake for men (35 mcg).
Main cautionNIH says chromium taken with insulin could raise the risk of low blood sugar and might add to the effect of metformin or other diabetes medicines. Ask a pharmacist.

The numbers

How does the chromium 35 mcg Daily Value compare with Olivaro?

No. The Daily Value for chromium is 35 mcg, and Olivaro's 0.7 mcg is 2% of it (NIH ODS, Chromium).

The math checks out: 0.7 / 35 = 0.02. NIH lists an adequate intake of 35 mcg for men and 25 mcg for women aged 19 to 50. Against 35 mcg the label amount is one fiftieth (0.7 / 35); against 25 mcg it is about 2.8%. NIH sets no upper limit for chromium.

Studies

Does chromium affect blood sugar?

Evidence is mixed and small. NIH calls the clinical significance of chromium's effects on glucose unclear (NIH ODS, Chromium).

NIH reports that chromium lowered fasting plasma glucose and HbA1c slightly in people with diabetes. A meta-analysis of 10 placebo-controlled trials with 509 people who had type 2 diabetes found only HbA1c was lower, not fasting glucose (Zhao 2022, chromium type 2 diabetes meta). The abstract gives no doses, so we cannot compare them with 0.7 mcg.

The ADA's 2026 Standards of Care say herbs and micronutrients are not recommended for glycemic benefit and that evidence for chromium is insufficient (ADA 2026, Standards of Care, supplements). NCCIH finds no reliable evidence that any herbal supplement controls diabetes (NCCIH, Diabetes and dietary supplements).

The bottle front reads “Fasting Blood Sugar Health Support*”. We found no trial that tested that claim on this liquid. Those trials used other products, so their results do not apply to Olivaro.

  • Chromium

    Very little

NIH calls the clinical significance of chromium's small effects 'unclear'; the label's 0.7 mcg is 2% of the Daily Value. (NIH ODS, Chromium) (Zhao 2022, chromium type 2 diabetes meta)

  • Gymnema

    Very little

Studies were small, mostly before-and-after, and very mixed; LiverTox says effectiveness in diabetes 'has not been shown'. (Devangan 2021, gymnema type 2 diabetes meta) (LiverTox, Gymnema)

  • The review looked at body fat, not blood sugar, and found inconsistent weight results. (Nikkhah 2026, Coleus forskohlii review)

  • Six trials of green tea found no difference in HbA1c or fasting glucose; guarana seeds hold up to 6% caffeine. (Yu 2017, green tea glycemic meta) (LiverTox, green tea)

  • Ginseng & herbs

    Very little

Results are mixed and the trials used preparations and doses the label does not match; ginseng lowered fasting glucose by 0.31 mmol/L in one meta-analysis. (Shishtar 2014, ginseng glycemic meta) (NCCIH, Asian ginseng)

  • Amino acids

    None shown

We found no source tying these amino acids at the blend's unstated amounts to blood sugar; NIH calls carnitine results in type 2 diabetes mixed. (NIH ODS, Carnitine) (Dong 2011, arginine BP)

  • Xylitol is dangerous for dogs; glycyrrhizin can raise blood pressure and lower potassium in large amounts. (FDA, Xylitol dangerous for dogs) (Zare 2024, stevia glucose meta)

Our plain reading of the research linked on each row, for blood sugar, glucose or weight, on a 0 to 4 scale. It rates the ingredient as studied, at the studied amounts. It does not rate Olivaro: no study has tested the liquid, and the label prints no amount for most rows.

Medicines

Can chromium be a problem with insulin or metformin?

Possibly. NIH says chromium taken with insulin could raise the risk of low blood sugar, and it might add to the effect of metformin or other diabetes medicines (NIH ODS, Chromium).

The label amount is small, but we cannot say what other blend rows add. Ask your clinician or pharmacist before adding any supplement, and keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed. Never stop, skip or change diabetes medicine because of a supplement.

Call 911 for severe low blood sugar

Confusion, fainting or a seizure need emergency care. Chest pain or trouble breathing also need 911. Milder signs include shakiness, hunger, dizziness, irritability and a fast heartbeat; check your meter if you have one and follow your care plan.

If you take it

Should you buy a chromium supplement for blood sugar?

A supplement is not a test or a treatment, and a home meter reading is your own data, not an Olivaro result.

If you want to know where your blood sugar stands, ask for a fasting glucose or A1C test. The label says pregnant or nursing mothers, children under 18 and anyone with a known medical condition should consult a physician first.

FAQ

Olivaro questions people ask

Is chromium in Olivaro an effective amount?

We cannot say. The label prints 0.7 mcg, 2% of the 35 mcg Daily Value. The meta-analysis abstract we read gives no trial doses, and no trial tested Olivaro, so there is no amount to compare.

What is the chromium Daily Value?

It is 35 mcg for adults. NIH lists an adequate intake of 35 mcg for men and 25 mcg for women aged 19 to 50. Olivaro's 0.7 mcg is 2% of the Daily Value (0.7 / 35).

Does chromium lower blood sugar?

NIH calls the clinical significance of its small effects unclear. In 10 trials with 509 people with type 2 diabetes, only HbA1c was lower, not fasting glucose. Olivaro has not been tested, and the label makes no claim that it treats diabetes.

Can I take chromium with insulin?

Ask your clinician or pharmacist first. NIH says chromium with insulin could raise the risk of low blood sugar. Do not change any prescribed medicine because of a supplement.

Why is chromium listed apart from the blend?

Under FDA's rule, a nutrient with a Daily Value is declared separately from the proprietary blend, so chromium gets its own amount. The blend's 22 ingredients share a 200 mg total.

Is chromium in Olivaro in picolinate form?

Yes, the label reads chromium as chromium picolinate. We found no source here that compares forms of chromium, so we make no claim about one form over another.
