What is a blood sugar supplement? A plain definition
What is a blood sugar supplement? It is a dietary supplement sold with wording about blood sugar on the label. It is a marketing category, not a drug class. The FDA does not approve supplements before sale, and a claim to treat a disease would make the product a drug.

Definition
What is a blood sugar supplement?
A blood sugar supplement is a dietary supplement, usually a capsule, powder or liquid, whose label or ads mention blood sugar. The phrase describes how it is sold. It does not describe a kind of medicine.
The FDA says a product meant to treat a disease is a drug, and that it does not approve dietary supplements for safety or effectiveness before they are sold (FDA 101 supplements). So no rule defines "blood sugar supplement" or tells you what one contains. The ingredients can be a single mineral, a herb or a long blend.
The same goes for "blood sugar support", the phrase on many labels. It has no legal definition we could find, so the words carry only what the maker puts behind them.
What labels may say
What can a blood sugar supplement label claim?
It may describe an effect on the normal structure or function of the body, with the FDA disclaimer. It may not say it treats, cures or prevents a disease such as diabetes (FDA structure/function claims).
That is why labels use soft words and a star. The FTC adds that any health claim needs competent and reliable scientific evidence (FTC health products guidance).
| Question | Dietary supplement | Diabetes medicine |
|---|---|---|
| FDA approval before sale | Not required | Required |
| May claim to treat diabetes | No | Yes, once approved |
| Label disclaimer | "Not evaluated by the FDA" | Not used |
Evidence
Do blood sugar supplements have any proof behind them?
Not enough to recommend them. The ADA's 2026 Standards of Care say herbs and micronutrients are not recommended for glycemic benefit, and that the evidence is insufficient, chromium included (ADA 2026, Standards of Care, supplements).
NCCIH found no reliable evidence that any herbal supplement controls diabetes, and it warns that supplements can interact with medicines (NCCIH, Diabetes and dietary supplements). A supplement is no substitute for a test or a care plan.
Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask your clinician or pharmacist before adding any supplement. Signs of severe low blood sugar (confusion, fainting, seizure), chest pain or trouble breathing: call 911.

Is Olivaro a blood sugar supplement?
Olivaro is sold in that category. It is a 30 mL liquid dietary supplement with a dropper, and its front prints “Balanced Blood Sugar Advanced Support*” (Olivaro label).
The star leads to the FDA statement. Below, each of the four label claims is set beside what the sources say. No trial tested Olivaro. See the benefits page for more.
“Balanced Blood Sugar Advanced Support*”
The ADA's Standards of Care say herbs and micronutrients are not recommended for glycemic benefit, and NCCIH finds no reliable evidence any herbal supplement controls diabetes. (ADA 2026, Standards of Care, supplements) (NCCIH, Diabetes and dietary supplements)
“Fasting Blood Sugar Health Support*”
Chromium meta-analysis: HbA1c lower, fasting glucose not (10 trials, 509 people with type 2 diabetes); green tea: no difference in either (6 trials). (Zhao 2022, chromium type 2 diabetes meta) (Yu 2017, green tea glycemic meta)
“Clean Ingredients*”
The panel lists 22 blend ingredients with no individual amounts, plus xylitol and sodium benzoate; 'clean' is not defined on the label and no test report is on file. (21 CFR 101.36(c), proprietary blends) (Saldanha 2023, proprietary blends perspectives)
“Balanced Form System*”
No source defines this phrase; the label prints a 200 mg blend and no per-ingredient amounts, so no dose can be compared with a study. (Saldanha 2023, proprietary blends perspectives) (21 CFR 101.36(c), proprietary blends)

How can you judge a blood sugar supplement for yourself?
Read the Supplement Facts panel before the front. Look for amounts, not just names.
A blend that lists many ingredients under one total, as Olivaro's does (22 names, 200 mg), cannot show whether any single one matches a studied amount. Our supplement facts page types out each row. If you order, read the total and shipping at checkout first.

FAQ
Olivaro questions people ask
Is a blood sugar supplement the same as diabetes medicine?
No. A diabetes medicine is a drug the FDA has approved for that use. A supplement is not approved before sale and may not claim to treat a disease. Never stop or change a prescribed medicine because of a supplement.
Who should avoid blood sugar supplements?
Anyone who takes insulin or diabetes pills should ask a clinician or pharmacist first, because some ingredients are studied for glucose effects. The Olivaro label also says pregnant or nursing mothers, anyone under 18 and anyone with a known medical condition should consult a physician.
What does the star after a label claim mean?
It leads to the FDA disclaimer: the statement has not been evaluated by the FDA, and the product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. It is a legal notice, not a test result.
