Safety

Is Olivaro safe? What the label and sources let us say

Quick answer

Is Olivaro safe? We cannot say it is, and we make no safety claim. We found no safety study of the liquid or of its 22-ingredient blend, and the label gives no amount for any blend ingredient. The label warns several groups to consult a physician. Bring the label to a pharmacist.

What we can say

Can anyone say Olivaro is safe?

No. Safety would need a study of this liquid, and we found none.

The FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety or effectiveness before sale, and says supplements can carry risks (FDA 101 supplements). The label itself warns that "Pregnant or nursing mothers, children under the age of 18 and individuals with a known medical condition should consult a physician", says "Do not exceed recommended dose" and says not to use the bottle if the seal is damaged or missing (Olivaro label).

A word on the front: the label's "Clean Ingredients*" line has no stated meaning and no test report is on file for it.

Known cautions

What cautions apply to the Olivaro ingredients?

Several ingredients have cautions in the sources we read, and the label prints no amount for any of them.

Cautions from our sources, by ingredient
ItemCaution
Chromium (0.7 mcg)May add to insulin and metformin; effect on glucose is unclear
Gymnema, green tea extractRare liver injury reports
Licorice-derived compoundGlycyrrhizin: lower potassium, higher blood pressure
Xylitol (other ingredient)Dangerous for dogs

See NIH on chromium (NIH ODS, Chromium), LiverTox on gymnema (LiverTox, Gymnema) and the review on glycyrrhizin (Deutch 2019, licorice and blood pressure). For xylitol and dogs, call a vet or animal poison control right away if a dog may have swallowed some (FDA, Xylitol dangerous for dogs). For tryptophan, glutamine, tyrosine, ornithine and GABA, we found no source on safety.

Questions for a pharmacist

What should you ask a pharmacist before taking Olivaro?

Ask whether any ingredient matters for your medicines, and bring a photo of the label.

This matters most for insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides, which can cause low blood sugar, and for blood pressure, blood thinner and heart-rhythm medicines.

  • List every medicine and supplement you take, including diabetes pills or insulin.
  • Ask whether green tea, ginseng, gymnema, coleus, chromium, grapefruit or the licorice-derived glycyrrhizinate could matter for your medicines.
  • Ask which low blood sugar signs to watch for and what to do.
  • Ask how often your blood sugar or A1C should be checked once you add a supplement.

Staying careful

What should you do if you decide to try it?

Follow the label, keep a record and know the stop signs.

Never stop or change a prescribed medicine because of a supplement, and keep your scheduled tests; a supplement is not a substitute. Stop and get care for rash, swelling, dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, or belly pain.

Call 911 for severe signs

Keep taking prescribed medicine. Confusion, fainting or a seizure, chest pain or trouble breathing: call 911.

FAQ

Olivaro questions people ask

Is Olivaro safe with diabetes medicine?

We cannot say it is. Insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides can cause low blood sugar, and NIH says chromium may add to insulin and metformin. Ask your clinician or pharmacist first, and never change a prescribed medicine because of a supplement.

Is Olivaro safe to take while pregnant or nursing?

The label says pregnant or nursing mothers should consult a physician before using this or any dietary supplement. We found no safety data for this blend in pregnancy, so ask your clinician.

Is Olivaro safe for dogs?

No. The liquid lists xylitol, which FDA says is dangerous for dogs. Keep the bottle out of reach, and call a vet or animal poison control right away if a dog may have swallowed some.
