Ingredient evidence

Gymnema evidence: what studies tested, and what the label leaves out

Quick answer

Gymnema evidence is limited. A review of 10 studies with 419 people who had type 2 diabetes used before-after comparisons and showed very high heterogeneity. LiverTox says effectiveness in diabetes is not shown and notes rare liver injury. Olivaro lists gymnema leaf extract with no amount, and no trial tested Olivaro.

The studies

What does gymnema evidence show?

Gymnema evidence is weak in design, not just small. The main review pooled 10 studies with 419 people who had type 2 diabetes, comparing their readings before and after, not against a placebo group (Devangan 2021, gymnema type 2 diabetes meta).

It reported very high heterogeneity, meaning the studies disagreed widely, and its abstract gives no doses. LiverTox describes mild fasting glucose falls but says effectiveness in diabetes is not shown (LiverTox, Gymnema). ADA's 2026 Standards of Care do not recommend herbs for glycemic benefit (ADA 2026, Standards of Care, supplements). No trial tested Olivaro.

The dose gap

How much gymnema is in Olivaro?

The label does not say. Olivaro lists gymnema leaf extract eighth among 22 blend names, inside a 200 mg proprietary blend with no individual amounts.

Gymnema: label against the typical dose
ItemAmountArithmetic
Olivaro labelNo gymnema amount printedAt most the whole 200 mg
LiverTox typical dose400 mg three times daily3 x 400 = 1,200 mg

That "at most" assumes the entire blend were gymnema, which no one claims. Preparations also differ, so even a match would not mean the same effect.

Cautions

Is gymnema sylvestre hard on the liver?

Rarely, but LiverTox lists gymnema as a possible cause of liver injury (LiverTox, Gymnema). Stop and get care for dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, or belly pain.

We found no drug-interaction statement for gymnema in that entry. The medicine caution rests on its glucose-lowering statements and NCCIH's general warnings: a supplement that might lower blood sugar adds to insulin or diabetes pills, so ask your pharmacist (NCCIH, Diabetes and dietary supplements). Keep taking prescribed medicine, and never stop or change it because of a supplement. Severe low blood sugar (confusion, fainting, seizure), chest pain or trouble breathing: call 911.

In context

How does gymnema compare with the other blend ingredients?

The bars below are an editor's reading of human studies for each ingredient, not a rating of Olivaro. Gymnema sits in a crowd of 22 names that share one 200 mg total.

  • Chromium

    Very little

NIH calls the clinical significance of chromium's small effects 'unclear'; the label's 0.7 mcg is 2% of the Daily Value. (NIH ODS, Chromium) (Zhao 2022, chromium type 2 diabetes meta)

  • Gymnema

    Very little

Studies were small, mostly before-and-after, and very mixed; LiverTox says effectiveness in diabetes 'has not been shown'. (Devangan 2021, gymnema type 2 diabetes meta) (LiverTox, Gymnema)

  • The review looked at body fat, not blood sugar, and found inconsistent weight results. (Nikkhah 2026, Coleus forskohlii review)

  • Six trials of green tea found no difference in HbA1c or fasting glucose; guarana seeds hold up to 6% caffeine. (Yu 2017, green tea glycemic meta) (LiverTox, green tea)

  • Ginseng & herbs

    Very little

Results are mixed and the trials used preparations and doses the label does not match; ginseng lowered fasting glucose by 0.31 mmol/L in one meta-analysis. (Shishtar 2014, ginseng glycemic meta) (NCCIH, Asian ginseng)

  • Amino acids

    None shown

We found no source tying these amino acids at the blend's unstated amounts to blood sugar; NIH calls carnitine results in type 2 diabetes mixed. (NIH ODS, Carnitine) (Dong 2011, arginine BP)

  • Xylitol is dangerous for dogs; glycyrrhizin can raise blood pressure and lower potassium in large amounts. (FDA, Xylitol dangerous for dogs) (Zare 2024, stevia glucose meta)

Our plain reading of the research linked on each row, for blood sugar, glucose or weight, on a 0 to 4 scale. It rates the ingredient as studied, at the studied amounts. It does not rate Olivaro: no study has tested the liquid, and the label prints no amount for most rows.

The gymnema page and the proprietary blend page explain the rest. Pregnant or nursing mothers, people under 18 and people with a known medical condition should consult a physician first.

FAQ

Olivaro questions people ask

Does gymnema sylvestre lower blood sugar?

Studies reported mild glucose falls, but the review was before-after, with very high heterogeneity, and LiverTox says effectiveness in diabetes is not shown. We cannot say it lowers anyone's blood sugar, and no trial tested Olivaro.

What is the usual gymnema dose?

LiverTox gives a typical dose of 400 mg three times daily, or 1,200 mg a day. Olivaro prints no gymnema amount, and its whole blend is 200 mg, so the label cannot be matched to that dose.

Who should ask a clinician before gymnema?

Anyone on insulin or diabetes pills, anyone with liver disease, and pregnant or nursing mothers, people under 18 and people with a known medical condition, as the label says. A pharmacist can check your medicines against the ingredient list.
