Blood sugar support ingredients: what to look for on the label

Quick answer

Blood sugar support ingredients are usually a mineral, a few herbs and amino acids. Trials of single ones gave small, mixed results, and a proprietary blend hides how much of each is inside. Olivaro lists 22 blend names under one 200 mg total, and no trial tested the blend.

Common ingredients

What are the common blood sugar support ingredients?

The usual list is chromium, gymnema, grape seed, ginseng, green tea and a few amino acids. Each has been studied alone, with mixed results.

The table gives four with a source. Doses in these reviews are not label doses.

Label terms

Which label terms should make you pause?

Three: a proprietary blend with no amounts, the word "support" with no number, and a long list that pairs well-studied names with unstudied ones.

FDA's rule has a maker declare a blend's total weight. The names go in descending order of predominance by weight, with no amount for each (21 CFR 101.36(c), proprietary blends). A review of such blends found them unusable for judging dose (Saldanha 2023, proprietary blends perspectives).

So a long list can look rich and tell you little. A name that trials tested at grams may sit in the bottle at milligrams.

One example

What are the Olivaro ingredients?

Olivaro lists chromium (as chromium picolinate) at 0.7 mcg and a proprietary blend of 22 names with a single 200 mg total (Olivaro label).

The most any one blend name could hold is 200 mg; if the 22 were equal, each would be about 9.1 mg (200 / 22), but the label does not say they are. For L-tryptophan, L-glutamine, L-tyrosine, L-ornithine and GABA we found no source on safety or blood sugar. Keep the bottle away from pets: it contains xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.

Row 1: Chromium (as chromium picolinate): 0.7 mcg, 2% of the Daily Value.

Row 2: Proprietary Blend, 200 mg in all (Daily Value not established), 22 ingredients in label order, with no amount printed for any single one:

  1. Maca (Lepidium meyenii) Root Extract
  2. Grape (Vitis vinifera) Seed Extract
  3. Guarana (Paullinia cupana) Seed Extract
  4. African Mango (Irvingia gabonensis) Seed Extract
  5. Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus Senticosus) Root Extract
  6. Astragalus Root Extract
  7. Green Tea (Camellia sinensis) Leaf Extract
  8. Gymnema Leaf Extract
  9. Coleus Forskohlii Root Extract
  10. Capsicum Annuum Fruit Extract
  11. Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) Fruit Extract
  12. Panax Ginseng Aerial Extract
  13. Raspberry Ketones
  14. L-Glutamine
  15. L-Tyrosine
  16. L-Arginine Base
  17. Beta-Alanine
  18. Monoammonium Glycyrrhizinate
  19. GABA (Gamma amino butyric acid)
  20. L-Ornithine HCl
  21. L-Tryptophan
  22. L-Carnitine Base

Other ingredients: Glycerin, water, organic lemon extract, stevia extract 97% (Reb A), xylitol, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, citric acid, natural flavors.

Typed from the label (Olivaro label). By FDA rule the ingredients of a proprietary blend are listed in descending order by weight (21 CFR 101.36(c), proprietary blends); the label does not print the weights.

FAQ

Olivaro questions people ask

Is a glucose support supplement the same as a blood sugar supplement?

They are two names for one marketing category. Neither is a drug class, and neither promises a result. Compare labels by what is printed: amounts, cautions and what the maker says was tested.

Does more ingredients mean a stronger supplement?

No. A long list under one blend total can mean small amounts of each. Without a printed amount per ingredient, you cannot compare any of them with a studied dose.

Does Olivaro contain olive?

The name suggests it, but the panel lists no olive leaf, olive fruit or olive extract. The listed ingredients are chromium and the 22-name blend, plus the other ingredients printed on the label.
