Amino acids

L-arginine, L-glutamine and blood sugar: what the evidence covers

Quick answer

L-arginine and L-glutamine are both in the Olivaro blend, and we found no source showing either changes blood sugar at the unstated amount. The blend shares 200 mg across 22 names. Studies of arginine used 4 to 24 g a day for blood pressure, far above any share of 200 mg.

Short answer

Do L-arginine and L-glutamine change blood sugar?

L-arginine and L-glutamine blood sugar effects are not shown for Olivaro: we found no study of either amino acid at the blend's unstated amount.

The panel lists seven amino acids (L-glutamine, L-tyrosine, L-arginine, beta-alanine, L-ornithine, L-tryptophan, L-carnitine) plus GABA. With 14 other names they share one 200 mg blend, and the label prints no amount for any row.

An amino acid supplement for diabetes is a common search, but the sources we read do not show a benefit from this blend. The ADA says herbs and micronutrients are not recommended for glycemic benefit (ADA 2026, Standards of Care, supplements).

What studies used

What did studies of each amino acid actually use?

Studies used gram doses, and for several rows we found no usable source at all.

Amino acid rows: what we found
RowWhat a source reportsGap
L-arginine11 trials, 387 people: 4 to 24 g a day lowered systolic blood pressure 5.4 mm Hg (Dong 2011, arginine BP)200 mg is at most 5% of 4,000 mg
L-carnitineThe body makes it; type 2 diabetes meta-analyses are mixed; stomach effects at about 3 g (NIH ODS, Carnitine)Label amount not printed
Beta-alanineTingling is the known side effect at gram doses (ISSN beta-alanine stand)Label amount not printed
L-glutamine, L-tyrosine, L-ornithine, L-tryptophan, GABAWe found no sourceNo comparison possible

Even if the whole blend were arginine, 200 / 4,000 = 0.05, or 5% of the low end of that range.

In the blend is not a dose

Why is an amino acid in the blend not a dose?

A name on a blend line tells you it is present, not how much; the rule only requires the blend total and a descending order (21 CFR 101.36(c), proprietary blends).

If the 22 names were equal, each would be about 9.1 mg (200 / 22), but the label does not say they are equal. Exercise studies of arginine mostly used 2 to 10 g a day (NIH ODS, exercise supplements), and 2 g is 2,000 mg. No trial tested Olivaro.

  • Chromium

    Very little

NIH calls the clinical significance of chromium's small effects 'unclear'; the label's 0.7 mcg is 2% of the Daily Value. (NIH ODS, Chromium) (Zhao 2022, chromium type 2 diabetes meta)

  • Gymnema

    Very little

Studies were small, mostly before-and-after, and very mixed; LiverTox says effectiveness in diabetes 'has not been shown'. (Devangan 2021, gymnema type 2 diabetes meta) (LiverTox, Gymnema)

  • The review looked at body fat, not blood sugar, and found inconsistent weight results. (Nikkhah 2026, Coleus forskohlii review)

  • Six trials of green tea found no difference in HbA1c or fasting glucose; guarana seeds hold up to 6% caffeine. (Yu 2017, green tea glycemic meta) (LiverTox, green tea)

  • Ginseng & herbs

    Very little

Results are mixed and the trials used preparations and doses the label does not match; ginseng lowered fasting glucose by 0.31 mmol/L in one meta-analysis. (Shishtar 2014, ginseng glycemic meta) (NCCIH, Asian ginseng)

  • Amino acids

    None shown

We found no source tying these amino acids at the blend's unstated amounts to blood sugar; NIH calls carnitine results in type 2 diabetes mixed. (NIH ODS, Carnitine) (Dong 2011, arginine BP)

  • Xylitol is dangerous for dogs; glycyrrhizin can raise blood pressure and lower potassium in large amounts. (FDA, Xylitol dangerous for dogs) (Zare 2024, stevia glucose meta)

Our plain reading of the research linked on each row, for blood sugar, glucose or weight, on a 0 to 4 scale. It rates the ingredient as studied, at the studied amounts. It does not rate Olivaro: no study has tested the liquid, and the label prints no amount for most rows.

Safety

Who should ask a pharmacist about amino acid supplements?

Anyone on insulin or diabetes pills, blood pressure medicine or heart medicine should ask a clinician or pharmacist first.

Arginine lowered blood pressure in trials, so people on blood pressure medicine have a reason to ask. Never stop or change a prescribed medicine because of a supplement.

Keep your care plan

Keep taking prescribed medicine. Signs of severe low blood sugar (confusion, fainting, seizure), chest pain or trouble breathing: call 911.

If you still want it

FAQ

Olivaro questions people ask

Is L-glutamine in Olivaro?

Yes, L-glutamine is the fourteenth name in the blend list, and the label prints no amount for it. We found no source on L-glutamine and blood sugar, so we make no claim about it.

Can an amino acid supplement replace diabetes medicine?

No. Nothing we read supports that. Talk to your clinician or pharmacist, and never stop or change a prescribed medicine because of a supplement.
